What changed
The other policy rates moved with it. The standing deposit facility rate, which banks earn on surplus funds parked with the RBI, is now 5.25%. The marginal standing facility rate and the Bank Rate are 5.75%.
The RBI projected consumer inflation of 5.2% for 2026-27 and raised its growth projection for the year to 7.1% from 6.7%.
Under RBI rules, floating-rate retail loans from banks that are linked to an external benchmark such as the repo rate, which covers most bank home loans taken since October 2019, must reset at least once every three months. Borrowers on these loans will see the change within a quarter.
The backdrop
The decision came as price pressures built. Consumer inflation rose every month of 2026, reaching 4.83% in August; September's figure, released five days after the decision, was 5.54%. Wholesale inflation was 11.39% in September, and Brent crude settled at $109.86 a barrel on 16 October.
Bond yields rose. The benchmark 10-year government bond yield was around 7.4% on 13 October, its highest in more than three years, before easing to 7.36% on 16 October.
