Cities remain the harder market

Urban unemployment edged up to 6.9% from 6.8%, and rural unemployment to 4.2% from 4.1%. The all-India rate was unchanged at 5.0%.

Labour force participation, the share of people working or looking for work, was 55.5%, against 55.6% in August. Participation rose in cities, to 50.7% from 50.4%, and fell in villages, to 58.0% from 58.2%.

Monthly PLFS estimates usually move by fractions of a percentage point, so they are best read as a trend over several months rather than month to month.
