Fuel led, but the rise was broad
Fuel and power was the fastest-rising group, with prices up 25.85% from a year earlier, against 22.93% in August. Manufactured products rose 9.76%, up from 8.37%. Primary articles rose 8.67% and the WPI food index 8.66%.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, settled at $109.86 a barrel on 16 October.
A wide gap with retail prices
Wholesale inflation in September was more than twice the 5.54% recorded by the consumer price index. Wholesale prices capture what producers and traders pay, including fuel and industrial inputs, while the CPI tracks what households pay, including services. A gap this wide can close in either direction: producers may pass higher costs on to consumers, or input prices may ease.
