The first month above 25 billion payments and ₹30 lakh crore. Payments grew faster than the money they carried, so the average payment shrank.

UPI processed 25.47 billion payments worth ₹31.53 lakh crore in October 2026, according to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data reported by Inc42. It is the first month above 25 billion payments and the first above ₹30 lakh crore. The previous volume high was 24.51 billion in August; September had dipped 1.8% from that.

A longer month helped

October has 31 days and September has 30, so the monthly totals flatter the growth. Per day, the picture is steadier: 822 million payments a day against 802 million in September, up 2.5%, and ₹1,01,707 crore a day against ₹97,913 crore, up 3.9%. The daily value crossing ₹1 lakh crore is the first time it has done so.

Spread over every second of October, that is about 9,500 payments and ₹1.18 crore moving each second. Those two figures are our calculations from the monthly totals.

Payments grew faster than value

Against October 2025, the number of payments rose 23% and the value moved rose 16%. Dividing value by volume, the average UPI payment was about ₹1,238 in October 2026, against about ₹1,318 a year earlier, a fall of about 6%. That is our calculation using the October 2025 figures of 20.70 billion payments and ₹27.28 lakh crore.

The arithmetic says the typical payment is smaller. It does not say why, and the NPCI figures do not break payments down by size or by who is paying, so we will not guess at the cause.

What the record does not mean

UPI value is money moved, not consumer spending, and the same money can move more than once. A record means more payments went through UPI, not that people spent that much more. NPCI publishes the November figures in early December; if volume stays above 25 billion, October will look like a step up and not a one-month peak.
